How the World Works 2

Dear Parents and Caregivers, Following our week of celebrations, we have resumed our Unit of Inquiry focused on shapes. Inspired by the story "这是什么形状?“ (What Shape Is It?), the children explored how different shapes can be combined to create various objects last week.  And this week, we further our understanding by examining the size and length of these shapes through the story "形状国王“ (The Shape's King), which tells of a king who builds a castle for the princess. To apply our knowledge practically, we enjoyed a shape hunt around the school during small group time. The children enthusiastically observed, sketched their designs, and discussed the combinations of shapes they discovered. It was a delightful and engaging experience! Thank you for your continued support. Please feel free to contact me at yammi.cheng@hillside.edu.hk. Class Blog:  Gecko Chinese Albums: Gecko AM                 Gecko PM

Iggy Peck Architect  Last week, we read the story "Iggy Peck Architect" by Andrea Beaty. When the characters in the story became stranded on an island, the children were inspired to think of creative solutions to cross the water. Children's answers included, "call the police", "swim", "make a boat".  It was brilliant to see and hear their problem-solving skills in action. We observed Iggy planning and designing a bridge while his classmates searched for materials like shoelaces, sticks, and logs. The Gecko's noticed everyone (the children in the story) working collaboratively to build the bridge. Some children used their imaginations to transform our carpet into a "sea" and built a bridge using foam and wooden blocks. It was wonderful to see the Gecko children collaborating, listening to each other's ideas, and working together to construct their bridge. Dear Gecko Class Families,  It was lovely to catch up with you this week to chat about how your Gecko has been settling into their new class. I found our time extremely valuable, as we exchanged our observations, and shared insights into the progress and growth your child has been making this term. Thank you so much for working in partnership with me to support your child's learning and development!  *** Making Friends This year, we were excited to welcome many children from the Panda class into the Gecko class, along with some fantastic new friends. It it lovely to see the welcoming classroom community that is beginning to blossom among the Geckos. They show kindness by inviting each other to play and have recently been using the "Buddy Badge" system, which allows them to invite new friends to join in their play or to seek out playmates.  As the term progresses, it's important to remember that interests and friendships can change. Encouraging children to be open-mind...
