Welcome to Term 3: Let's Get Creative!
Dear Gecko Class Families,
Welcome back from the Easter holiday! I hope everyone had a wonderful break filled with rest and family time. We’re kicking off a very short but exciting Term 3 with a brand new Unit of Inquiry—How We Express Ourselves—and it’s already full of music, movement, and creativity!
Our Central Idea for this unit is:
People can express their imagination and ideas in different ways.
Throughout this unit, we’ll be focusing on using our imaginations and being creative through art, music, drama, and dance. The children will have lots of opportunities to explore different ways of expressing themselves and discover their own unique voices!
At this age, developing imagination and creativity is so important. It helps children build confidence, problem-solving skills, empathy, and emotional expression. Giving them different tools to share their ideas not only strengthens their communication but also helps them connect with others in meaningful ways.
We’re also going to focus on building connections with people, and understanding that different people can have different feelings and ways of expressing themselves.
An Art Explosion to Start!
We started the week strong with a big art explosion in our classroom! The Geckos explored so many different art materials—watercolours, oil pastels, clay, sponge stamping, and mark making. It was wonderful to see them experimenting and expressing themselves through so many different mediums. Our little Geckos truly are amazing artists! Stay tuned for even more artistic adventures in the coming months.Book Day Fun!
Book Day was absolutely adorable! The children proudly wore their costumes and were excited to tell us which character they were. We’ve been learning about characters at school too, and using our imaginations to create our own! We were inspired by the book "I'm Not Just a Scribble" and made our very own scribble characters. The children gave their scribbles creative names like "Mr. Upsidedown" and even acted them out using their bodies—it was so much fun to see their ideas come to life!Popcorn Math!
We also had a delicious way to practice subtraction this week—by eating popcorn! The children had so much fun playing number games and practicing their counting skills in the tastiest way possible.Songs We’re Singing
Here are some of the songs we’ve been singing at school together. Feel free to have a sing-along at home too!Share Your Child’s Creativity!
Soon, we’ll be talking even more about how we can express ourselves, and how the extracurricular activities the children do outside school are wonderful examples of this.We would love to see how they express themselves at home—whether through dance, music, painting, sports, or any other way! Here’s a link [ AM / PM ] to the album where you can upload photos or videos.
We’re so excited for the coming weeks—it’s going to be full of imagination, creativity, and connection!
ESF City Nature Challenge: Join Us!
This inter-school challenge encourages all ESF schools to document wildlife around Hong Kong. It’s open to everyone—students, staff, and families!
As part of the global City Nature Challenge, this friendly competition at the end of April invites cities worldwide to see who can document the most wildlife species. The data collected will help showcase Hong Kong alongside cities like San Francisco, London, Cape Town, Sydney, and Mumbai.
Warmly,
Penney
